Just Found Out Your Car Battery Is Dead?
If you want to know how a professional emergency battery jumper would suggest motorists jump-starting their cars, then read this post now.
Safety
Before you start, make sure both your clothing and jewellery don’t interfere with the procedure. If possible wear protective gloves and goggles and tie back hair and clothing. No smoking should be allowed near the battery to remain safe during this procedure.
Check and clean all jumper cables
Make sure that the connectors and wires are in good condition and rust-free. Also, you may need to clean the clamps before you attach them to the car battery. Even unused clamps will often have gunk on them when they have been sitting in your garage or trunk of your car for an extended period of time.
Connecting the cables
Connect one red clamp to the positive terminal of the incapacitated car battery. This is denoted by a circled (+). Connect the other one to the positive terminal of the working vehicle. Connect the black clamp to the negative terminal, which is denoted by a negative (‘-‘) symbol.
To avoid ‘sparks’ connect the other black jumper cable clamp onto a good ground on the engine like a metal bracket. Some vehicles come with large steel or brass grounding studs that work well.
Attempt to start the incapacitated car
Try to start the dead car, if it starts, great news! Leave it to run for a few minutes and disconnect the cables. Once they have been removed, drive it to a service for a new battery or for the mechanic to check it out.
If the vehicle doesn’t start immediately, try a couple more times. Make the second attempt three minutes after the first one, and the final attempt only after 10 minutes.
