Battery jumpers are handheld devices that help to deliver power to a car’s electrical system and quickly start up a vehicle with a dead battery. It’s important to know how to properly use this tool so you can get your car going in no time. Here are some of the best ways to use an emergency battery jumper.
Check Battery Connections
The first step when using a battery jumper is to check that all the connections between the cables and the battery terminals are secure and clean. Loose or corroded connections can cause power issues and prevent the jumper from working correctly. Make sure all cables are secured tightly before attempting to jump-start your car.
Connect Cables in the Proper Order
Once you have verified that all connections are secure, it’s important to connect the cables in the proper order. Start by attaching one of the jumper cable clamps to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery. Then attach the other clamp to the positive (+) terminal of a working battery, usually from another car. Connect the negative (-) clamp from the jumper cable to an unpainted metal surface on the engine block, such as a bolt or bracket, and then connect the remaining negative (-) clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the working battery.
Start Vehicle with Working Battery
Once all connections are made, start the vehicle with the working battery and let it run for a few minutes before attempting to start the car with the dead battery. This will give time for some of the charge from the working battery to transfer over to the dead battery and help it turn over more easily.
Start Vehicle With Dead Battery
Now that the working battery has had a few minutes to transfer some of its charges, it’s time to start the vehicle with the dead battery. Turn off all accessories in both cars and if possible, shift the car with the dead battery into neutral or park. Then attempt to start the vehicle with the dead battery and let it run for at least 10 minutes to allow for a full charge.
