Power It Up Safely
Emergency battery jumper cables are a simple but effective means of jump-starting your vehicle, whether you’re stranded on a dark country road or your battery has just given up the ghost. There are several cables and jumpers available, so make sure you choose the correct one for your vehicle. The following are all specifications for the cables we use:
Make & Model
The make and model of your vehicle will affect the specific jumper cables you need to use. For example, a modern-day vehicle will use a different cable than a classic muscle car. Make sure you have the right cables and know the make and model of your vehicle.
Length
The jumper cables must be long enough to reach your car to the other vehicle and to connect the batteries. Even if your car is running on its last legs, it won’t start if the cables aren’t long enough. A pair of jumper cables are not long enough to jump-start a truck or a large recreational vehicle, so buy or make longer cables if you think you’ll need them.
Insulation
The jumper cables will come with insulation on either end. This prevents the metal parts of your car’s battery from connecting with the jumper cables, which can result in a short circuit and blow out your car’s electrical system. The jumper cables must have insulation, so make sure you unwrap both ends before you attach them to your vehicle and its battery.
Connections
All jumper cables have connections that must be made with care. The positive (+) connection is the red one that goes to the positive terminal of your dead battery, and the negative (-) connection is on the other end. Both the battery positive and negative terminals are often affixed with a red and green label, so be careful when you make these connections, and make them correctly.
